The Goddard School of Columbia Expands to Serve 50 More Children |
|
The Goddard School of Columbia marked an expansion milestone with a ribbon-cutting ceremony attended by notable guests including County Executive Calvin Ball, Councilwoman Christiana Rigby, HCEDA CEO Jennifer Jones, Howard Community College President Dr. Daria Willis, Maryland Department of Commerce representatives Ivy Gales and Sarah K. McMahon.
The school has expanded from 11 classrooms in 12,500 square feet to 15 classrooms just over 18,000 square feet. To support the business expansion, HCEDA provided business connection and assistance with the Maryland Department of Commerce ‘s Child Care Capital Support Revolving Loan Fund and the owners partnered with Howard Community College’s Childcare Professional Apprenticeship Program.

Shimadzu Scientific Instruments Expands with New R&D Center |

Shimadzu Scientific Instruments (SSI), headquartered in Columbia since 1975, has now expanded their facility to include a new R&D Center for scientists and mechanical and design engineers. It was an honor to attend the expansion celebration and be joined by Shimadzu Scientific Instruments President Maeda and Shimadzu Corporation President/CEO Yamamoto, who was in attendance from Japan.

Regional Economic Scorecard Unveiled |
|
The Greater Baltimore Committee (GBC) has unveiled a groundbreaking tool for the region—the first-ever Investment Scorecard. This initiative marks a step forward in measuring and tracking the economic growth of Greater Baltimore, setting a benchmark for future development. The scorecard provides essential data on investment and development deals, labor force trends and tax revenue, offering valuable insights into the region's economic landscape.
In 2023, the scorecard revealed that the region attracted 347 investment and development deals for a total of $4.19 billion. GBC predicts that these investments will create 23,000 new direct jobs, generating $1.7 billion in labor income. As seen in the scorecard, Howard County is a significant asset for the region.
Looking ahead, regional collaboration and competitiveness will be crucial for Greater Baltimore's success over the next decade. By working together and leveraging our strengths, we can position the region as a dynamic hub for innovation, investment and opportunity. The Investment Scorecard serves as a powerful tool in this endeavor, providing a roadmap for strategic decision-making and ensuring the continued growth and competitiveness of our region. |

Port of Baltimore Emergency Business Assistance Program
In response to the recent disruption of operations at the Port of Baltimore, the Maryland Department of Commerce is launching the Port of Baltimore Emergency Business Assistance Program. This funding resource aims to provide temporary economic and financial relief to eligible businesses impacted by the disruption.
The application portal opens on April 22, 2024. Recipients of grants must intend to continue operations at the Port of Baltimore upon the resumption of full operations. |

Port of Baltimore Worker Retention Program
As part of Governor Moore's response to the economic impact caused by the recent collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge, Maryland’s Department of Labor has established the Port of Baltimore Worker Retention Program. This initiative is designed to provide financial assistance to businesses to retain their workforce during this challenging period.
Eligible businesses must demonstrate financial hardship due to the Francis Scott Key Bridge collapse. Applications for the Worker Retention Program open concurrently with the Port of Baltimore Emergency Business Assistance Program on April 22, 2024. |
