Howard County Launches First-Ever
Enterprise Zone to Boost Business Growth |
Howard County Executive Calvin Ball has unveiled the county’s first Enterprise Zone, a transformative initiative aimed at driving economic growth along Route 1 and in Columbia Gateway. This new designation offers significant tax benefits for businesses that invest in property improvements and job creation.
The Eastern Howard County Enterprise Zone provides property tax credits for businesses making capital improvements, reducing tax increases for up to 10 years. Additionally, companies hiring new employees in the zone can qualify for state income tax credits, with enhanced incentives for hiring economically disadvantaged workers.
Designed to encourage redevelopment and job growth, the Enterprise Zone aligns with Howard County’s broader economic strategy, supporting businesses while strengthening the local economy. For more information, businesses can contact HCEDA at incentives@hceda.org. |

Protecting Your Data During Data Privacy Week |
The National Cybersecurity Alliance (link) has named January 27-31, 2025 as Data Privacy Week, a global campaign dedicated to empowering individuals and organizations to prioritize data privacy and security. This year’s theme is Take Control of Your Data. Here are a few tips to help navigate all the data you have and how you can protect it:
-
Make informed decisions about sharing your data with businesses or services.
-
Create unique passwords for each account and device to help keep data more secure. Research and identify a quality password manager to help store that information in a secure way.
-
Use multifactor authentication (MFA) wherever it’s permitted – this keeps your data safer even if your password is compromised.
-
Turn on automatic device, software, and browser updates, or make sure you install updates as soon as they are available. Updates always have security enhancements built in to keep data safer.
-
Don’t fall for phishing messages, which can be sent as emails, texts, or direct messages. These many times look real and try to convince you to tap a link, download a document, or reply. Stay alert!
As part of our commitment to helping Howard County businesses stay secure, we recently hosted a Business Disaster Preparedness Workshop on January 23rd, focusing on cybersecurity threats such as fraud, data breaches, scams and other common attempts to compromise an organization’s cyber infrastructure. Attendees gained valuable insights from industry experts on how to identify and protect their businesses against these threats.
If you missed this session, don’t worry—our next Business Disaster Preparedness Workshop is coming up on March 27th. These workshops are designed to equip businesses with the tools they need to stay resilient in an increasingly digital world. Join us for our next session and take a proactive approach to our next topic, flood preparedness. Stay tuned for registration details! |

Celebrating the Lunar New Year at the AACC Luncheon |
We were proud to sponsor the Asian-American Chamber of Commerce’s "Lunch with Leaders: Lunar New Year Luncheon" at the Tea Horse Sichuan Bistro (link) in Ellicott City. The event brought together business and community leaders to celebrate the Lunar New Year and foster new connections.
This year, we welcome the Year of the Snake, a symbol of wisdom, transformation and new beginnings. As we transition from the energetic Year of the Dragon, the Snake’s intuitive energy encourages personal growth, change and deeper relationships.
Lunar New Year celebrations span up to 16 days, culminating in the Lantern Festival on February 12. While the first 7 days (January 29 – February 4) are observed as public holidays, the entire celebration is a time of joy, renewal and hope for the months ahead.
Let’s embrace this season of reflection, prosperity and forward momentum. HCEDA wishes everyone a year filled with success, happiness and transformation! |
