Building the Future Workforce: Apprenticeships

at Johns Hopkins Howard County Medical Center

Johns Hopkins Apprenticeships- Workforce Initiatives

Skilled trades are essential, yet finding qualified workers is a growing challenge. Johns Hopkins Howard County Medical Center is addressing this need through its apprenticeship program, training the next generation in HVAC, electrical, plumbing, and facility maintenance. Apprentices gain hands-on experience, industry certifications, and mentorship while earning a paycheck.

Rather than relying on external hiring, the hospital is developing talent from within. Mentorship ensures that experienced professionals pass down critical knowledge, creating a skilled workforce for the future. “The hope is that we train these folks and transfer the knowledge from the mentor to the apprentice. When they graduate, they stay with us,” says Rachel Waltermyer, Senior Program Coordinator.
